Ratz Proteinskimmer

Protein skimmer applicable with ozone for removal of dissolved organics and fine particles

Ratz Protein Skimmers are designed for aquaculture facilities with the benefits of removing dissolved organic matter and fine particles from large water streams. Ratz Protein Skimmers are ready to use for ozone injection boosting foam formation for optimal extraction of organics from the water column.

Your benefits with Ratz Protein Skimmer

Removes dissolved organic matter including proteins, colour and off-flavour compounds such as Geosmin and MIB.

Allows for optimal ozone injection into large water streams.

Reduces the number of fine particles and free floating bacteria.

Control foaming in an enclosed chamber and reduce downstream foaming events.

Safe and easy site for ozone injection.

Reduce heterotrophic growth, oxygen consumption and boost downstram filtration performance in your RAS facility.

Technical data on Ratz Protein Skimmer

A fine bubble cloud of injected air and ozone creates a rising bubble cloud entrapping particles and organic matter in the water column. Foam with upconcentrated organics spill over into the Collection chamber for final removal of foam and organics.

Booster pumps ensure continous injection of gas and small bubbles via a venturi system reusing potential degassed ozone for reinjection.

Range: Ratz Protein Skimmers are built and delivered treating flows from 15 up to 640 m3/h, constructed in PE at our factory in Germany.

Our engineering team can advise you of optimal installation guidance to incorporate the Ratz Protein Skimmer into your facility.

Frequently asked questions Ratz Protein Skimmer

Protein skimmers work by entrapping and removing organic matter, found as fine particles or dissolved organic matter (DOM), in the water body. A venturi drive and a pump ensure an injection of small and fine bubbles, which adsorb the particles on the surface of the bubble. The bubbles rise to the top and escape the water as foam, expelling the entrapped organics.

New water continuously replaces the void of the skimmer, ensuring a continuous process of removing organics from the RAS water stream.

Ozone ensures a partial oxidation of organic compounds like proteins, bacteria, virus, geosmin, colour and particles; the oxidation process ensures a stable foaming process, boosting the amount of particles removed in the foaming process.

Protein skimmers are used in all levels of aquaculture where water is recirculated, and are especially used at high levels of recirculation and in grow-out systems where fish are raised in RAS until harvest size. This ensures low levels of organic matter to improve oxygen usage, maintain biofiltration levels by suppressing heterotrophic bacteria, and oxidize and remove off-flavour compounds such as geosmin and MIB-2.

Protein skimmers are also used in public and private aquaria to improve visibility in the water and to protect organisms that do not thrive in a nutrient-rich environment, such as corals.

Protein skimmers have a booster pump that will be serviced or exchanged on a timeframe of years.

Water nozzles should be checked and cleaned monthly

Water level and ozone dosage may need to be adjusted by operational staff daily, depending on other activity in the system, such as feeding, starving, moving of fish etc.

Ratz Protein Skimmers can handle flows from 10 m³/h up to 740 m³/h on a single unit from our standard line. Specially built, top-mounted Ratz Protein Skimmers suited for concrete builds (T-Ratz) can handle several thousand m³/h, based on your project’s needs.

Geosmin is oxidized by ozone and removed in the foam. The overall removal of organic matter can supress the bacteria producing geosmin in the system.

Protein skimmers can work without ozone in saltwater systems, but ozone is generally advised to severely boost foam production and oxidize organic molecules that would not be removed naturally in foam. For freshwater operation, ozone is a necessity to create stable foam.

Yes, freshwater aquaculture systems with a high load of organic matter and fine particles will benefit from protein skimming in combination with ozone. The ozone is needed to start the degradation of dissolved molecules, thus stabilizing the foam.
