HEX Drum Filter

Reliable suspended solids removal for fresh- and saltwater

Say goodbye to troublesome chain drives and belts that require constant replacement. The HEX Drum filter F-series features the most reliable drive on the market—our direct driven gear wheels (DDGW).  Especially popular in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), the F-series HEX Drum filter is renowned for low maintenance requirements. With up to 10.000 m³/h capacity the biggest size of the F-series bears an unofficial world record.

Technical data on HEX | Drum Filter F-series

HEX Drum filter F-series’ robust and innovative design performs efficiently with minimal energy and water usage, thanks to our intelligent control system, HEX IC.

  • Types: C-Version (channel installed type), H-Version (half-tank type).
  • Material: Cover made of black UV-resistant PE-100. Drum and frame made of AISI316 stainless steel for high corrosion resistance in saltwater or AISI304 for cost efficiency in freshwater.
  • Modular sizing: Three different drum diameter sizes and modular length design fits a wide range of flow requirements.
  • Flow Rate: Handles 120 m³/h to 10.000 m³/h depending on filter size and length, TSS level, salinity and mesh size of the filter cloth.
  • Filter media: Woven stainless (60-1.000 micron) or synthetic mesh (10-500 microns).
  • Drive system: Direct driven gear wheels (DDGW).
  • Backwashing: Ceramic nozzles, no moving parts.

C-Version

Hex Drum Filter C-version

The C-Version is a Drum filter with the drum mounted in an open frame to fit into a channel installation

H-Version

HEX Drum Filter H-Version

The H-Version is a Drum filter with flexible mounting. The inlet can be made as open channel or pipe inlet. The outlet is open, but with a level tank protecting the filter

Frequently asked questions about HEX | Drum filter F-series

The HEX | Drum filter F-series is a range of robust drum filters designed for intensive aquaculture, public aquariums, and industrial water systems. It´s the HEX | Drum filter series with the classic stainless-steel design including innovative features: The direct driven gear wheels (DDGW), the HEX HP panels, the HDPE noise cancelling hood and the highest flow capacity in the market – 10.000 m³/h. They offer high flow capacity, efficient solids removal, and long-term durability.

Yes. The HEX | Drum filter F-series can be manufactured with seawater-resistant HDPE and marine-grade stainless steel (AISI316) components.

Water flows through a rotating drum fitted with a fine mesh. Solids are trapped on the screen and automatically rinsed off by high-pressure nozzles during backwash.

Standard mesh sizes range from 10 to 150 microns with polyester mesh and 25 to 500 microns with stainless-steel mesh, depending on solids load and filtration goals.

The HEX | Drum filter F-Series includes several drum sizes (1,2 to 2 meters in diameter and 1,2 to 8 meters in length) and two different frame designs (open channel and half-tank version), available in two different grades of stainless steel (AISI304 for freshwater and AISI316 for saltwater installations). Options include different screen mesh sizes, flexible inlet/outlet layouts and passive overflow boxes/wingwalls.

Like all HEX | Drum filters, the HEX | Drum filter F-series is self-cleaning, but routine inspection is recommended. In most cases:

  • Visual checks weekly
  • Nozzle and seal inspection every 1-3 months
  • Bearing and drive system check every 6-12 months
  • Screen panel replacement depending on wear, typically every 1-3 years

Actual frequency depends on solids load, water quality, and filter size.

Typical users include commercial aquaculture facilities, shrimp and fish RAS farms, public aquariums, universities, R&D institutions, and engineering companies.

Proper sizing is based on:

  • Water flow rate (m³/h)
  • Total suspended solids (TSS)
  • Mesh opening size (microns)
  • Required hydraulic loading rate
  • Species and production density
  • Freshwater vs. seawater application

Choosing the right model ensures stable filtration performance and protects downstream components like biofilters.
